Composed in 1842, Robert Schumann’s “chamber music year”, String Quartet op. 41 no. 3 is a romantic reinterpretation of the quintessential classical genre, also inspired by the contributions of Felix Mendelssohn, to whom it was dedicated. In 1903, Maurice Ravel, who was still a student at the Paris Conservatoire, dedicated his only String Quartet to his teacher Gabriel Fauré.
