Two Bach Suites mark the end of the golden era of the viola da gamba in the 1720s, beginning the modern history of the cello. These suites frame two of the four sonatas (1960–1985) by Polish-born composer Mieczysław Weinberg, considered one of the most significant contributions to exploring the instrument’s pure “voice” in the 20th century.
