Two of the most celebrated ballets of the twentieth century – Petrushka, composed in 1911 by a young Stravinsky at the behest of the “Tsar” of the Ballets Russes, Sergej Djagilev, and Romeo and Juliet, composed, despite numerous challenges, between 1935 and 1936 by Prokofiev for the Kirov Theatre – are presented here in a version for chamber orchestra. This reinterpretation reveals previously unheard sonic layers, giving a fresh twist to these two masterpieces.
