The formation of the string sextet (two violins, two violas, and two cellos, or three pairs of the same instruments, or also a double trio of different instruments) proved to be an excellent support for Brahms during his tormented career, when he was dealing with a catalogue of chamber (and symphonic) music on which the examples of the great masters of the past weighed – with the esteemed Beethoven at the front of the line. Brahms had his first independent chamber music opportunity with his two Sextets, which he composed between 1859 and 1865, as he was able to introduce his own reinterpretation of the classic tradition.
