N. Paganini
Concerto No. 2, Op. 6
for violin and orchestra
F. Schubert
Symphony No. 6, D. 589
Contemporary works, Paganini’s Violin Concerto No. 1 Op. 6 and Schubert’s Symphony No. 6 D. 589 were both composed between 1817 and 1818. Their roles, however, were quite different. The former opened a catalog of six Paganini concertos that, for the time, amazed with their difficulty and artifice (thanks in part to the technique known as scordatura), while the latter (nicknamed the “Little C major”) closed a group of six symphonies by a young Schubert (1813-18), his first approach to a repertoire that would give us some true masterpieces.
