W. A. Mozart (1756 -1791)
Concerto for piano and orchestra no. 20 KV 466
Symphony no. 40 KV 550
Two of Mozart’s most important masterpieces, both characterised by stürmisch shades and the choice of minor tonalities.
Composed in 1785, at the height of his career, in Concerto KV 466 formal perfection and expressive anguish seamlessly converge to bestow an unprecedented “dramatic character eloquence” upon the genre (Casella). Despite all the difficulties and a fair share of stinging defeats (Vienna’s lukewarm reception of Don Giovanni), the fruitful Symphony
K 550, composed in the summer of 1788, is perhaps the most famous and best-admired of Mozart’s compositions.
