Music of Beethoven, Stravinsky, Prokofiev, Ravel

One of the most famous Beethoven sonatas, the “brilliant” (or “very concertante”) Sonata Op. 47 opens a program that focuses entirely on pages from the collaboration or inspiration which violin virtuosos have given to duets composed for violin and piano. There is Rodolphe Kreutzer, though he never performed the Beethoven sonata himself; Samuel Dushkin, for whom Stravinsky wrote the Suite Italienne in 1932 as well as the outstanding Concerto; Pavel Kochanskij, for whom Prokofiev readapted his Five Melodies in 1925; and Jelly d’Arany, whom Ravel paid homage to with Tzigane, in 1924.
