Death and the Maiden

“Sulphurous and gentle, this Death and the Maiden has a decisive tone: no ifs, ands, or buts. The precise, enchanting movements express beauty and sensuality: everything that will be returned to the severe Fates – here, video-virtual-verbal – with very human terror”.

Three different “masterpieces”, all on one stage. One is musical: the String Quartet No. 14 in D Minor ‘Death and the Maiden’ by Franz Schubert. One is physical: human beings expressing the excellence of their dynamics. And one is spiritual-philosophical: the mystery of the end, and its constant gaze on us. The Company’s focus returns to rest on humans and what defines them: the miracles of human existence are life and death, the beginning and the end. This passing from one form to another has something to do with the art of dance, which fulfils that task; dancing itself is a flashing of images which continuously appear and disappear. This is an example of musical composition that reaches for infinity and accompanies the listener beyond a rational idea, towards the unknown and the sublime. “Sulphurous and gentle, this Death and the Maiden has a decisive tone: no ifs, ands, or buts. The precise, enchanting movements express beauty and sensuality: everything that will be returned to the severe Fates – here, video-virtual-verbal – with very human terror”.
