F. Chopin
Concerto No. 2, Op. 21
for piano and orchestra
F. Schubert
Symphony No. 5, D. 485
Two of the best-known proponents of the early Romantic era are presented as a sort of diptych for this concert, in which Schubert and Chopin are depicted on the threshold of their 20s in two works that are already perfectly “them”. Schubert’s Fifth Symphony, considered to be the most “Mozartian” of his works, dates back to 1816, while Chopin’s Concert No. 2 dates back to 1829-30. In both cases, the two composers also performed for the debuts of the two works, Schubert playing the viola with the orchestra and Chopin, of course, on the piano.
