The Orchestral Suites (or Ouvertures, as the author called them) are one of Bach’s most sensitive and original contributions to French fashion that was all the rage in early eighteenth century German courts, including that of Leopold, Prince of Anhalt-Köthen, where Bach served from 1717 to 1723, the period to which the composition of this corpus is usually attributed.
